It is necessary to take periodic backups of your essential data. When it comes to your blog posts, it applies the same methodology.
I use wordpress.com for blogging. WordPress team take periodic backups for blog posts automatically. They do all the maintenance work for you. You don’t have to worry about. If some day the server where your blog stored, become unusable and beyond repair, still they can recover your blog site with all your posts.
If your blog is hosted here at WordPress.com, we handle all necessary backups. If a very large meteor were to hit all the WordPress.com servers and destroy them beyond repair, all of your data would still be safe and we could have your blog online within a couple of days (after the meteor situation died down, of course).
If you still want to take backup of your blog posts manually then it is also can be possible. You can export all your website content and save in your personal storage. It is exported as a XML file with all your posts, comments, tags and categories. If needed in future you can import this file to your wordpress.com website.
But if you want to back up your blog content manually, you are free to do so by using the Tools -> Export option described above. This is certainly still a good idea, especially if you’ve assigned additional users to your blog. Editors and administrators have the ability to delete any posts or pages, and there is no way to recover material that they remove from your blog.
If you open the XML file you can see all your content there. Please don’t change this file content otherwise your import process to wordpress.com may be not be successful.

Arnab Roy Chowdhury

 <wp:wp_author></wp:wp_author> <wp:category></wp:category> <wp:tag></wp:tag>

You can find import and export options under Tools menu. It is nice short utility from wordpress.com team so that you can take backup of your contents. Please read more about backing up your content here.
